Tone/instrument generators with i2m musicport

Post by dmcmasters »

Hello. I am a new user and have played around a bit with the musicport into studio one and the default instruments... pretty slick. I'd like to be able to use this without running it through the computer. The config I envision would be harmonica/vocal mic into musicport into tone/instrument generator stand alone module into pa channel. Does anyone do this? Can anyone recommend standalone tone/instrument banks that they are using with the musicport? The goal would be to have a fairly portable set up to take to gigs. Just the mic, harps, musicport, and small foot print tone generator.

Thank You.

Most tone generators/sound modules won't accept a USB input for MIDI -- so they can't be connected directly to the i2M.

A USB host device, like this one from Kenton, will let you connect the i2M to any standard 5-pin MIDI equipment: http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/ ... host.shtml

The most compact solution would be to have a G2M (http://www.sonuus.com/products_g2m.html) for live use, and the i2M for using on your computer. The G2M uses 5-pin MIDI so connects directly to most MIDI equipment. The newest version of the G2M (version 3) has some configuration options like the i2M, but is not as extensive. The MIDI conversion in the G2M (version 3) is exactly the same as the i2M (with the latest firmware), so they should perform the same for you.

I've used sound modules from Yamaha (the Motif range) and Roland... both sound very good. But I'm sure there are lots of other options too. I think it's a good idea to know the kind of sounds you want to get before choosing, because you may find that some are better at different sounds.

Thanks for the response. I found that kenton unit on line as well. So, thanks for the confirmation. Is the G2M going to be as effective with the mic input to midi as the musicport? It's interesting that this device never came up in my research on this topic. I spent about 10 hour googling for alternatives for this application and it never popped up once. The intended application would be woodwind, brass, synth, orchestra, violin, and pads... To convert the harp tones to these instruments with the same control I have over the harp... bends, trills, chords, etc... Thanks again for the info.

Edit - Looking at these again it seems that only one note at a time is available on both of these units. Which is fine.

The MIDI conversion on the new G2M is identical to the i2M, so yes it works just the same for microphone. The main difference with a microphone is that the i2M has a front-end pre-amp with an extra 24dB (which is variable) of gain compared to the G2M. This might be useful on low-output microphones.

The MIDI conversion on the i2M is very configurable. See the editor details:

http://www.sonuus.com/products_i2m_mp_e ... enu_anchor

The G2M is more limited (because there is not such an easy way to control it). If you look on the second page of the manual for "Configuration Options" you will see what is available. It is a sub-set of what the i2M has: http://www.sonuus.com/downloads/sonuus-G2M-Manual.pdf
