USB MIDI

Post by canbaz »

Hi James,

Is it possible to send/receive MIDI messages between Voluum and Wahoo over USB ports on both devices, without computer or MIDI host connection?

In addition, is it possible to pass MIDI messages that are received on Voluum's 5-pin MIDI input, to Wahoo over USB ports, without computer or MIDI host connection?

If not, could a simple software update make these available?

Thanks

It's not possible because USB needs a "host" to work. Neither the Wahoo nor Voluum have the necessary hardware to support this host function.

You need a USB host (that can connect to the Wahoo) that has MIDI ports (to connect to the Voluum's MIDI ports). Kenton make a device for this (http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/ ... host.shtml).

In my case, I need the Wahoo to be able to receive program changes via MIDI, to change presets.
James, does it actually accept PC messages for changing presets?

Anywho, I found this here at hobbytronics and will try it, looks promising and very affordable, compared to the professional solutions by Kenton or Disaster Area...

Please let me know what you think!

The one you found from Hobbytronics looks perfect. I didn't know about it, but it looks good.

Yes, the Wahoo will respond to receiving MIDI program change to select presets.

In normal mode, bank-select is used to switch between factory and user presets. Then program change 0-99 is used to select which preset you want.

In setlist mode, you can choose whichever program change message you want for each program. No bank select is used here.

(The Voluum is the same.)

Thanks, I did not know about the bank select which is currently not possible in my setup with my minimal MIDI Program Change switcher (Midi Mouse)... Good that we talked.

Have to take look into the setlist mode then. Any obvious limitiations of that mode in functionality?

Cheers, CaB

There are no limitations in setlist mode. There are "features" for live use, which disable some things. You can only select the presets you have chosen, and you can't go into preset edit mode. You lock the pedal to enter setlist mode when it has been configured.

A quick overview of setlist mode here: https://youtu.be/dt-I3CmNG6Q

Yes, that looks like another good option.
