Audio Output On/Off depending on the MIDI note

Post by francoisBass »

Hi all, and first congratulations to Sonuus for this wonderful device which is the i2M :D

Since a few days I am wondering if there is a way when using the i2M ASIO driver to turn the ASIO audio output on or off depending on the MIDI note played.

Indeed, I use the i2M with my 5 string bass, and thanks to it I can simultaneously drive soft-synths (using the pitch-to-MIDI conversion) as well as process my bass sound into bass-amplifiers plugins using the ASIO audio functionality. However I always hear simultaneously both soft-synth (MIDI) output and the processed bass sound (ASIO audio).

Thanks to the i2M editor, it is possible to filter MIDI output but still to hear the audio (ASIO) output. But is there a way to do the opposite, i.e. for certain notes to only hear MIDI output but no Audio (i.e. bass sound from ASIO driver) ? Indeed my wish would be for instance for low-notes (B and E strings) to hear only soft-synth sounds but not the ASIO bass sound. Or this could be the opposite : soft-synths sound when playing high notes, and only the bass sound for low notes.

Is this functionality already implemented into the i2M ? Or could it be a possible firmware upgrade for the ASIO driver or the i2M editor ?

I hope I was clear enough, and thanks in advance for your help.

Interesting...

Currently, there is no way to do this. However, we could look at it as an option in a firmware update. Essentially, we'd need to add a way to selectively mute the audio under certain situations: those you describe, and possibly others.

I've added it to our list of things to look at.

I'm pleased to hear you like the i2M :D

Hi.

I'm back with this subject as it seems it has not been implemented yet in the latest firmware update. Have you some plans to implement it in the next firmwares ? Or do you know if there is a software alternative (i.e. VST or other plugin) which could help to emulate this function ?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

I don't know if there is a VST plug-in that will do this, but it's possible that there is, given there are so many available now.

We have not forgotten about this, but we need to work out how best to integrate it into the editor so it makes most sense. Maybe the best thing is to have some discussion here about possibilities?

Hi James, and sorry for the late reply.

Following your advice to have some discussion here about this subject, I've been looking at the i2m editor interface, and this gave me a few ideas.

My suggestion could be for instance that for each active zone in each midi-configuration panel, there would be a "Audio output On/Off" switch (like the "hold" switch), and depending on its value there would be ASIO audio output or not.

However the problem could be for zones with overlapping notes but with different audio-output setups. Then there could in each midi-configuration panel a combo box with "audio off priority" or "audio on priority" choices. Or this could be a global choice for all midi configurations which could be in the "settings" area of the "setup" panel for instance. This depends on what you think is the easier to implement.

Waiting for your comments...

Hi to everyone at Sonuus.

I go back to this topic following the post I sent 5 years ago (already ! time goes too fast...).

Unfortunately it seems that nothing has been done on the i2m control software in this direction, i.e. audio output from i2m on/off depending on the Midi note played. I've been looking on the web but didn't find any VST which seems able to achieve this function (but in my opinion I think that it would be better if it was a native i2m function).

Therefore are there any plan to progress on this side ? I'm a bit disappointed to see that nothing has been done in 5 years, and I may be not the only one wishing for this (there are other bass players in the world using the i2m I think:D ).

Thanks.

François
