i2M audio is NOISY

Post by prometh »

When hooking my guitar up to my MacBook Pro's audio input, the audio is clean, even when running through amp simulations. When I use the i2M's audio, it's very very noisy and I cannot figure out why.

Signal Path: Instrument → Grace m101 → Axe-Fx II → Stewart World 1.2 → Atomic Reactor FRs

How noisy is it? Is it only noticeable using amp-sims, or all the time?

What does the noise sound like, is it white or a hum?

White/pink noise. It's noticeable all the time, but the amps really amplify it.

There will be some noise. The input has a very high impedance which does produce more noise than a low-impedance input. Also, the converter is 16-bit, so it won't be as quiet as a 24-bit converter.

The question is whether it is higher than it should be...

What's the gain is set on the i2M's preamp? Does the noise reduce as the gain is reduced?

Have you tried rebooting the Mac? I've had noise problems and this has always solved the problem. Also only open the applications you need.
Good luck!

Setting the preamp gain to -12dB had little effect. I've also tried rebooting, etc

It sounds like the i2M may have developed a fault.

Is it possible to record some audio to let us have a look to confirm this?

Does the i2M show any other problems?

I just tried my laptop's input again and it's noisy too, but not as noisy. I guess my guitar is noisy and my Axe-Fx II must really be cleaning it up.

Try with a different guitar/lead, or with a different input entirely, like a microphone, synth or whatever you have.

I am getting the high frequency disturbance that is mentioned here as the line input issue, but that's far less difficult right now than the more noticeable noise..
